Matthijs De Light explains why he chose Juventus over the rest and is not Ronaldo.

Matthijs de Ligt signed for Juventus this summer after having a lot to pick from European most top clubs who were after him.

Delight in Turin

The former Ajax captain was being chased by the likes of Manchester United, Barcelona, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich but chose the 8× Serie A consecutive champions.

Having sealed the £67.5m switch to Turin, the 19-year-old surprisingly suggested that a part of the decision was that Juve promised him regular first-team football, but the other clubs had not which was a decisive part of his decision to join the old Ladies.

‘It was a difficult choice,’ De Ligt told the official Ajax website. ‘There were several options, but you always have to look what’s the best for you.

‘Various factors play a role. For me it’s very important to know how much you are going to play and how much trust the club has in me.

‘They also mentioned that they really wanted me. They saw a future for me and the they could improve me in certain areas.’

De Ligt was fantastic and delight to watch for Ajax and Netherlands last season.
The teenager not only believes that Juve made the best offer to him, but that he was also keen to learn the art of defending in Italy.

The centre-back says he ‘fell in love with the Italian way of defending’ and that was another big influence on his decision to snub England, Spain, Germany and France.

‘I have been fascinated by the Italian way of defending from an early age, De Ligt continued.

‘Many of my idols from the past are also Italians. Such as [Paolo] Maldini, [Franco] Baresi, [Alessandro] Nesta, [Fabio] Cannavaro and [Gaetano] Scirea.

‘When you talk about defenders, then you soon talk about those names.

‘I actually fell in love with the Italian way of defending and I made a choice based on that.’ And everybody will agree to the the reasons the teenage sensation brought to bare.
